The concept started during a long boring stint at a large average company. We didn't get out of the office much.
Long, cold Winters where the sun set before we left the office was causing havoc. The project was behind schedule and
management was asking for 60-70 hour weeks to make up time that was clearly miscalculated. The risk of the project was
horrificly under-estimated and the latest calculated cost was twice that of the budget.
The sun was setting soon after I had had lunch and the cloud that hung so low seemed imminent. The best thing to do was to
take a break and walk around the office. Make myself look like I had somewhere to go. No questions were ever asked
beyond the standard: "is it done yet?"
Things were bleak. My cube neighbor had taken to calling the computer "magical." I would overhear him say things like
"Then the computer just magically comes up with the number." He hadn't lost his mind. This was how he managed our team.
Stared blankly out at the parking lot from the top of the "L" shaped building from the 2nd of the three floors the
feeling of being beaten was not be be evade.
I was dreaming. That was, clearly, why I was there. Above the mass of cold cars was the sun setting.
That was what I wanted. That was what I needed. The beauty of nature. But how?
Nearly tripping over my two feet on the way back to my desk, two fundamental questions came to mind.
What makes the sky blue? Why is the sunset red?
